ADSL is a type of DSL. DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is transmitted on copper phone lines and able to carry analog and digital signals. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) allows for greater data flowing in than going out.
High band-width technologies. The most compelling document I found was "Consumer Demand for Broadband Services: xDSL, Cable Modems, and Wireless." Market Research Reports. Dec. 1998.

It talked of ISDN's failure because of it high price and poor marketing. But cable modem jumped ahead of DSL in marketing; with their similar prices for modems, cable's head start could mean DSL's success must wait a few years.
Vannever Bush. I found it interesting that he spent so much time discussing microfilm to store data. His Memex shared many similar traits of the web, search engines and scanners. Yes, Bush had some great ideas that predicted the web.
Internet Pioneers. Leonard Kleinrock for writing the first paper on packet-switch theory. Also, JCR Licklider and W Clark for their work "Galactic Network," with concepts for distributed social interaction. And finally, Tim Berners-Lee for writing a notebook program, "Enquire-Within-Upon-Everything" and creating the "WorldWideWeb" program.
Software Download. I like Download.com for the popular picks, Shareware.com for their CNET guide, and ZDNet Software Library for their development tools and graphics.

Assignment: Internet Searching
NUA Surveys. The articles point to the significant increases in e-commerce and traffic. It seems that businesses are seriously looking at the web's possibilities, although it is not a panacea, as of yet.
NUA. A great majority of corporates have a web site. Also, a great majority of executives believe the internet will change commerce as we know it. But most do not expect to see a return on their investments in the internet for a couple of years. Further, of the corporate web sites, a little more that a third conduct commerce. In addition, five pitfalls of companies include not having a manager fully trained in the new technology, not designating a specific team to use and update the new technologies, companies need to look ahead and use new technologies in their plans, and they need to look at their competitors in their use of new technology and embrace change. Trends include adopting comprehensive business process outsourcing and e-commerce sites spending money on "sweet spots"--transcations and subscriptions. Also, one-third of companies do not have an internet disaster plan. Further, Financial Services spearhead the use of Java because of its use in self-service applications, like online banking.
Meta Tags. Meta tags help search engines that use them because things like tables and JavaScript may push keywords further down a page.

Fortress. "Who Am I Trying to Reach" brings good point on
cultural sensitivity. "...Purpose of My Site" warns against
graphics with obscure or confusing meanings. "...Resources" tells
of developing, editing and troubleshooting costs. "...Metaphor..."
suggests a common theme for a site.
Web Design Group. Good tools - especially HTML Validator. Bulletin Boards are interesting. People asking technical questions; I even made a reply.

Midterm. Worked for a few hours. Searching for the answers went really well until about 7pm; it was like running into a brick wall--the internet was soooo slow! I gave up at 8:30pm.

Midterm. Woke up at 5:15am, my usual time for work, and put in a half hour of searching to finish-up the midterm. What a difference a day makes on the internet! When I search for something, results actually appear!

Mary Haggard article summary--
Intro
This provides a start in learning key concepts. It is for computer pros and will cover the basics, plus Advanced Java and ActiveX.
Internet suggestions are corporate structure, jobs press releases, stockholder information, catalogs, products, praise, customer service and a newsletter. Also, HTML was defined as the language of the web.
Issues to consider before publishing include following W3C standards, ensure multiple browser compatibility and control access with PICS-based internet ratings system.
Design
Design comprises of cooperation between designer and client. The client needs to provide the right information and needs to understand the demographics of the target audience. Also, visiting similar and competing sites works well in getting an idea of what works and what does not. The client needs to review in committee a few times throughout the process. Requesting a few versions up front helps to have better choices. Also, time is best on the generous side when it comes to creativity and satisfaction.

Course Notes 7 - Web Design Group "Tools"
This tool is very comprehensive. It lists many resources, including HTML in Japanes and CSS in Chinese. Unfortunately, these resources are not adequately described.
WDG Quick Review
CSS is a way to present documents browsers. Unfortunately, the use of Media besides Media=screen is not supported.

WDG Quick Review (continued)
CSS has the advantage of providing one-stop page set-up; it gets the set-up done in one spot, instead of sporadically throughout the document.
STYLE SHEETS
Linking: best for many pages, enables changing the whole site by changing one file. But REL="Alternative Stylesheet" is unsupported.
Embedding: for a document with a different style than the rest of the site.
Importing: can be created for 1) common elements 2) less common elements 3) table style sheets.
Inlining: used for all BODY elements except BASEFONT, PARAM, and SCRIPT. It is the most inflexible of the style sheets. It mixes content with presentation, applying to all media (no way to specify the intended medium).
One last note, CSS is not always validated at the HTML 3.2 level. It does pose mostly great conveniences for the web author.
